Your Personality Is Your Edge — Use It Smarter in Your Career

Someone once said,
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.”

When setting your goals, it only makes sense to plan around your strengths. I’ve always believed that you can learn any skill or foster any personal characteristic if you commit to it, but it’s smarter to start from what you already have: the skills, talents, and traits that come naturally to you, rather than trying to build everything from scratch. To do that, you first need to find out where your strengths truly lie.

Knowing your strengths is one thing; understanding why you function in a certain way is another. You might be a strong leader, decisive, focused, and results-driven, but also overly critical or more task-oriented than people-focused. We all have different traits, and understanding ourselves helps us make better moves in both life and career.

One good way to learn more about yourself is by asking for feedback from the people around you, such as your team, colleagues, or stakeholders. Recently, while exploring my own traits, I was advised to take two personality tests that I’ll share with you below. They’re not 100% accurate, but they can give you useful insights into how you operate and where your natural tendencies lie.

Here are two free tests worth trying:

It might be interesting to know that I had taken both years ago, and my results were quite different this time. It reminded me that we change and can develop any characteristic we choose. When I retook them last week, I noticed some useful insights about my strengths and weaknesses. Now I am in a better position to plan my next steps and actions in order to develop the skills and characteristics that I need.

Not everything in the results will feel like you, but you’ll likely spot patterns or traits you hadn’t noticed before, and those are your leads.

If you try them, I’d love to hear what you discovered and how it helped you decide on your next steps.

Remember to keep moving forward!
